Abstract
962,340. Discharge apparatus. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. July 12, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 24288/60. Heading H1X. Apparatus for use in the quantitative spectrum analysis of solutions in an electrical spark discharge, comprises two metallic electrodes 4 provided with angled surfaces 5 at their discharge ends and rotatable about their longitudinal axes, the electrodes being disposed in one plane with the discharge ends 5 adjacent one another and with the axes enclosing an angle of less than 180 degrees whereby a spark region 6 is fixed by a region of constant minimum distance between the angled surfaces, an atomizer being provided for spraying a solution 7 into the spark region, a spray nozzle 3 of the atomizer lying opposite the apex of the said angle. The atomizer comprises a piston 9 movable in a syringe cylinder 8 by a variable gear drive 10 from a synchronous motor 11 to supply a fixed quantity of solution per unit time to the spark discharge. The generation of the spray solution can be effected by pneumatic, electrostatic or direct atomization or by atomization in an antechamber from which a mist of liquid is conveyed to the nozzle 3.
