Abstract
<PICT:0793298/III/1> <PICT:0793298/III/2> <PICT:0793298/III/3> <PICT:0793298/III/4> Electrostatic spray coating apparatus includes a pneumatic spray gun 12 having an end cap 54 of electrically non-conducting material through which the spray issues, a discharge electrode 16 and a current collecting electrode 14 between which the spray stream passes. The spray is thereby electrically charged and the insulated cap 54 reduces the danger of sparking. Electrode 16 consists of a number of pointed rods 80 in fan-shaped array secured to a head 86 at the end of a supporting rod 88, and the electrode 14 comprises a flat plate with curved edges. The gun and electrodes are supported on a mounting 10 adjustably arranged on a stand 30 by a bolt 28. A rod interconnects the inner ends of the electrode rods 80 and is attached to a socket 84 which receives a plug 94; the latter is connected to a high-voltage lead 91 extending through the rod 88 which is detachably attached to the mounting 10 by a spring clip. The gun, Fig. 5, has a spring control needle 130 and a tip 56, through which the spray liquid flows, both formed of nylon; air flows through the cap 54 and passages 59 to confine the spray into a narrow band. A conductor 106, Fig. 7, connects the mounting 10, gun and electrode 14 to the positive terminal, maintained at or near zero potential, of a power supply unit 92. The cable 91 is connected to the high negative potential terminal of the unit. A low-voltage supply feeds the unit via normally open contacts 112, 114 which are closed by a coil 115 when spraying is commenced, and the normally open contacts 120 of an airflow-operated switch 122 are closed. A source of high-pressure air 126 feeds the gun through the switch 122 which, when operated, retracts the gun needle 130 and admits spray material to the gun from a reservoir 132 maintained under slight pressure. An atomizing air source 136 is also connected to the gun. Workpieces 142 to be coated are carried past the gun on an electrically earthed conveyer 144.
