Abstract

<FORM:0901969/III/1> A portable electrostatic spray gun, for use in coating systems in which an electrostatic field is created between the gun and article to be coated, comprises an electric motor 7 within a housing 5 which drives, through shafts 39, 45 a hollow rotor 49 into which spray liquid is fed from a pipe 53 and from the sharp edge 50 of which the liquid is atomized. Air is discharged from orifices 57 in a ring 56 to provide an axially flowing airstream about the edge of the rotor so as to confine the particles to an axial path towards the target A to be coated which is earthed. The rotor is maintained at a high potential by a conductor 25 which connects with the head H mounted on an electrically non-conductive sleeve 36. As the liquid is discharged from the sharp edge 50 the particles are uniformly charged throughout the transversatility of the spray. The gun handle has a passage 26 for the motor supply cable, a passage 30 for the spray liquid which flows through a pipe 33 to a pipe 53, and a passage 27 feeding air to the motor housing. Cooling of the motor is effected by this air which then passes through the sleeve 36 and passage 47 to pipes 58 supplying the ring 56. A motor switch 20 is provided.
