Abstract

In an electrostatic coating apparatus a pneumatic spray gun 12 is connected to one side of a high voltage source and the workpiece is connected to the other, and the gun, which is of metal, is encased in a dielectric material 30 having an opening for the gun nozzle 34, so that charge leakage is concentrated at the nozzle. The air nozzle 47 of the gun is of dielectric material. The casing, which is an epoxy resin, is moulded around the gun and surrounds nylon pipes 48-50 supplying, respectively, atomizing air, pressure air for operating the paint valve 20, Fig. 5, and paint. The end of a high voltage supply lead 15 is covered by a nylon tube 44 also surrounded by the casing. A part of the charge leakage of the gun is caused to escape through the paint in the feed pipe 50, and for this purpose one end of a wire conductor 67, Fig. 5, extends into the bore of a nylon pipe 54 connected by metallic parts 52, 53 to the pipe 50. The wire is connected to the opposite earthed side of the high voltage source by means of a housing 19, Fig. 2, and the opposite end of <PICT:0891449/III/1> <PICT:0891449/III/2> <PICT:0891449/III/3> the wire conductor is attached to a drum within the housing and rotatable by a knob 66 to thereby adjust the position of the end of the wire in the pipe 54; thus the charge leakage through the paint is adjusted. In Fig. 6 a pneumatic metallic spray gun 70 is mounted within an epoxy resin casing 71 into which air pipes and a high voltage connector 83 are fed. Paint is supplied to the gun via pipe 91, the bore of a nylon member 92, a spiral passage 96 in a dielectric insert 95, a bored metallic member 100 and a metallic tube 102. To provide a charge leakage through the paint an earthed spring steel spiral wire 108, attached at one end to a metal rod 109, and of a diameter smaller than that of the spiral passage, is threaded into that passage by an amount which is adjusted by turning the rod 109 by a knob 111.
