Abstract

1288619 Spray coating ELECTROGASDYNAMICS Inc 30 Dec 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 63325/69 Headings B2F and B2L An electrostatic spray coating device comprises a gun 28 having a body of insulating material, means 36 at one end for atomising coating liquid with a stream of seeded air, electrogasdynamic power generating means 50 caused to operate by a second stream of seeded air which creates an electrostatically induced ionised atmosphere at the nozzle 36 and a conduit 30 for supplying seeded air under pressure from a remote source 26 thereof through the gun 28 to the atomizing means 36 and the power generating means 50. Paint to be sprayed passes from a pressurised container 16 to the gun 28 by means of a conduit 24 and leaves the gun through a trigger controlled needle valve 132 which is adjustable by means of a screw 142 at the opposite end of the gun. A second supply conduit 30 leads air from a paint solvent container 16 which introduces droplets of solvent into the air stream to seed it. This mixture passes through a conduit 90 in the handle of the gun, through a trigger operated valve 104 and into a chamber 112. From the chamber 112 the seeded air passes between an electrode 124, which is maintained at a potential of about 5000 volts by means of an outside source 38 and an electric cable 40, and an electrode 194. The seeded air, which collects ions from this electrostatic field, passes through a tube 158 and builds up an electric charge on a probe 198 which is directly connected to an outlet nozzle 120 to produce a higher potential electrostatic field between the end of the gun and the article to be coated. After leaving the end of the tube 158 the seeded air returns via tube 156 to a part 160 from whence by passages not shown it exits from the nozzle 170 by means of passages 174 to control the spray pattern. The shape of the passage around the electrode 194 may be altered e.g. by stepping to produce an increased effect of collecting ions. The shape of the outlet tube may also be altered e.g. by cutting a 'V' notch thereon or chamfering.
