Abstract

1415346 Spray producers; coating apparatus RANSBURG CORP 20 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53592/72 Headings B2F and B2L A powder spray gun permitting rapid change from spraying one coating material to another has a barrel 11 having an open-sided channel 18 in the side of the barrel and extending the length thereof, the channel being adapted to receive and retain a feed tube 20 connected to a reservoir of material to be sprayed. The tube is resilient and is retained in the channel by means of tabs 21 and 22 and a member 20b, Each reservoir (13), Figure 1 (not shown), includes a foraminous sheet through which compressed air permeates to fluidize powder therein, and the fluidized powder is delivered to the gun via a venturi pump (36). The reservoirs (13) are provided with devices (88), Fig. 5 (not shown), for retaining the feed tubes when not in use, each tube when retained by such a device deactivates the respective reservoir, and removal of a tube from the device for insertion into the spray gun activates the respective reservoir. Th nozzle assembly 38 of the gun is coated with an electrically-conductive material for electrostatic spraying, the electrical supply and fluidized powder supply to the gun being controlled by a trigger 43. The spray pattern is controlled by means of a fixed deflector (48), Figure 3 (not shown), and tangential jets of compressed air forming a whirling discharge, the intensity of the jets being controlled by a needle valve (67). The nozzle assembly may also be provided with a rotating powder-distributing means (not shown). A trigger controls the supply of powder and the supply of high voltage.
