Abstract

<PICT:0888540/III/1> <PICT:0888540/III/2> <PICT:0888540/III/3> A coating installation includes an atomizer 10 between which and an article 28, Fig. 5, to be coated a unidirectional electrostatic field is established, and the field strength is insufficient to atomize the coating material but sufficient to convey the atomized liquid towards the article. The atomizer has a liquid flow passage 14, Figs. 2 and 3, and an opening 26 therefrom feeding an annular chamber 25 leading to an annular discharge orifice 23 where it is atomized by air at relatively low pressure flowing from an annular orifice 24. The liquid and air are supplied to the rear of the atomizer, and the air flows from an inlet 32 through an annular passage 17 and openings 19 to an annular passage 20. The latter may have spiral splines for imparting whirl to the air. The atomizer and a high voltage electrode 27 are supported by a stand 31 and an insulating cylinder 30, and the atomizer is maintained at a potential of the same polarity as the electrode but of somewhat lower magnitude. A counter electrode 29 is located behind the article to direct atomized particles back to the article which is maintained at an opposite potential.
