Abstract
804,806. Spray producers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 31, 1956 [Nov. 3, 1955], No. 9534/58. Divided out of 804,805. Class 69 (3). An atomizer for an electrostatic coating installation in which liquid is atomized by a high-potential electrostatic field established between the atomizer and an oppositely charged article to be coated comprises a cylindrical inner member 12 within a cylindrical cavity in a spherical outer member 11, and an annular discharge passage 32, with oppositely sloping walls leading to a discharge orifice 30, is provided between the lips of the members 11 and 12. A stem 22 of the member 12 screws into a bore 24 so that the member can be axially adjusted to provide a variation in the width of the discharge orifice. Liquid is fed to a passage 38 and passes from an annulus 34 to the discharge passage 32, and is atomized at the sharp discharge edges of the orifice 30. A liquid seal 40 is provided. In order that the members may have relative rotation, the inner member has a ring gear 64 which meshes with a pinion 66 of a drive shaft 68. The stem of the inner member is in two parts joined by a split bearing 62. A gas manifold 52 surrounds the member 11 and a gas is fed thereto via a line 54, and flows from an annulus 56 in the form of a sheath which surrounds the issuing spray.
