Abstract

<PICT:0854502/III/1> In a method of coating an object with electrostatically charged particles of a liquid coating material in an electrostatic field created between the object and a spray device, air flow is directed from the device towards the object, adjacent and surrounding the spray which is thereby stabilized. The atomizing head 10 comprises a hollow shell 70 divided by a thick wall 74 from a spherical container 76 having discharge lips 92, 94. The shell 70 is screwed at 73 to a member 60 having a skirt 64 which is secured by a union nut 54 to a conventional nozzle 40, the tip 42 of which engages a washer 43 at the entrance to a central bore 62 in the member 60. A connection 55 enables a high voltage to be applied to the head 10. Liquid coating material is led from the nozzle 40 and bore 62 to a hollow connection 80 which extends through a central opening in the wall 74 into the container 76. Air is delivered under pressure from a chamber 48 surrounding the nozzle 40, through openings 66 in the member 60 to the interior of the shell 70 and thence by tubes 100 to points closely adjacent the lips 92, 94, which may, as shown, be disposed to deflect emergent liquid, e.g. upwardly, or may be equidistantly spaced at each side of the lips 92, 94 and extend equal distances outwardly. The device may be rotatably adjustable to dispose the opening between the lips 92 in selected angular positions between the horizontal and vertical. The head is connected to a high voltage source and the article is earthed. Specification 793,108 is referred to.
