Abstract

<PICT:0847613/III/1> A workpiece is provided with a siccative coating, the liquid destined to form the coating being pressure atomised by propelling it through a narrow orifice under high pressure to produce a fine spray which is ionised by electrodes immediately adjacent to and outside the source of the spray, the ionised spray then being propelled to the workpiece by an electrostatic field. As shown, electrostatic spraying apparatus comprises a nozzle 13 which may be of diamond or sapphire, or of neoprene or polyvinyl chloride, in which latter cases it may be compressible, and immediately adjacent ionising electrodes 14, which may be spaced around the nozzle. A high potential is applied between the nozzle assembly and the workpiece 10. A number of nozzles may be used on either side of the workpiece, staggered so as to avoid mutual opposition.
