962,296. Pneumatic gauging. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Aug. 23, 1962, No. 32516/62. Heading G1M. A gauging device comprises a U-tube 5 containing a conducting liquid e.g. mercury with one arm connected by a tube 4 to a pressure depending on the size of an object 1 being gauged and the other arm containing conducting probes 9 e.g. of tungsten of varying length so that according to the size of object 1 the mercury will contact a varying number of probes 9 to complete, via transistor amplifiers, indicating and/or printing circuits. The pressure depending on the size of object is produced by means of a piston 2 engaging object 1 and slidable in a fixed tube 3 to progressively cover a bleed hole 8. Air at constant pressure is supplied through tube 6 to tube 4 and bleed hole 8. A plurality of pistons 2 and tubes 3 may be used to gauge different dimensions of the object.
