A suction-tube 5 is bent partly around a knotter 12 and is connected to a side wall of the tube 4. The inside bend of the tube 5 is formed with a narrow cut 14 that joins a narrow cut 13 in the tube 4 at a point below the knotter 12. The tube 4 is slidable on an inner tube 6 having a tapering nozzle 8 at its lower end, a slotted closure plate 9 at its upper end, and a lateral opening 10 which, at the setting shown, is aligned with the suction tube 5. The slot in the closure plate 9 extends into the lateral opening 10. When the yarn 15 breaks a yarn detector in the form of a feeler or scanner (not shown) swings a slub catcher 16 out of its normal position and then moves the cone 2 against the nozzle 8. The rotation of the cone 2 is reversed and the loose end of the yarn is drawn into the nozzle 8 and thence into the tube 5 from whence it escapes via the cut 14 so that it is laid across the knotter 12. Similarly the yarn end from the supply 1 is drawn down the tube 4 and into the tube 5 from whence it escapes via the narrow cuts 13, 14 so that it also is laid across the knotter 12. The knotter 12 then operates, the suction in the tube 5 is cut off and winding is re-commenced. When a new supply spool 1 is fitted, the tube 4 is raised to surround the spool 1, Fig, 3. This movement blocks the lateral opening 10 and, with the closure plate 9 in position, ensures maximum suction in the tube 4 for the purpose of unwinding the free end of the yarn from the new spool 1 and supply it to the knotter 12.
