Abstract
959,324. Thermal switches; cam-operated switches. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. July 21, 1961, No. 26617/61. Heading H2B. A cycling switch comprises a pivoted bimetal 63 with an offset portion 70 engaging on elongated slot 86 in the free end of a resilient switch contact-carrying arm 88, a heating coil surrounding the bimetal which latter is secured at its pivot 34 to a compensating bimetal 62, means for adjusting the initial position of the pivoting bimetal assembly via an abutment member 56, and a permanent magnet 102 and armature 92 providing snap opening and closing of switch contacts 94, 96. A control cam 32 is rotatable by hand in either direction to alter the position of an adjusting member 50, spring-biased towards a cam surface 42, and thus to adjust abutment member 56. A second cam surface 110 actuates a resilient contact arm 112 between switch contacts 120, 122 and a pilot light contact 124. Contact pairs 94, 96 and 120, 122 are in circuit respectively on either side of a power source supplying energy to a controlled heating element (not shown), and the bimetal heating coil is connected across the controlled heating element to contacts 94, 122 by leads 84. In an embodiment the actuating bimetal 63 moves an arm a short distance to strike the switch contact-carrying arm, thereby breaking contact welds (Figs. 7, 8, not shown).
