Abstract
In the production of penicillins by fermentation, there is used as precursor a halide, particularly a chloride, of an acid of the formula: R2-X-R1-Z2 wherein R2 is an organic radical, X is oxygen, sulphur or a direct linkage between R1 and R2, R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted bivalent aliphatic radical, and Z2 is -COOH or -SO3H. Many examples are given of the production of penicillins by this process by the use of acid chlorides such as a -phenoxy propionyl chloride, phenoxy acetyl chloride, a -ethyl phenoxy acetyl chloride, o-cresoxy acetyl chloride, phenyl mercapto acetyl chloride and cyclohexyl acetyl chloride. Mixtures of penicillins may be obtained by carrying out at least part of the fermentation in the presence of at least two different precursor compounds, at least one of which is a halide of an acid of the above general formula.
