Abstract

Organic disulphides are prepared by reacting mercaptans with a solution of elemental sulphur in an organic solvent, particularly an organic disulphide and especially the desired product. A small amount of an amine may be present. The process may be operated continuously in countercurrent, e.g. in a plate-type or packed column. Alkyl, aryl or aralkyl compounds may be prepared. Methyl, butyl, hexyl and phenyldisulphides are prepared in examples.
