Abstract
958,449. Stacking. MATHEWS CONVEYER CO. Ltd. Nov. 2, 1962 [Nov. 9, 1961], No. 41494/62. Heading B8C. Cartons supplied on a continuously moving endless conveyer 10 are delivered one at a time to stacking mechanism including a hoist 50 having a pair of arms 55, Fig. 4, on which the cartons are raised above the level of retractable members 73, 74 having flanges 81 which support each carton in turn during the formation of the stack. The leading carton is held by an abutment 15 on one of a pair of pedestals 40, until released automatically by an air cylinder and piston 24 for onward movement by the conveyer 10. A guard on the side of the piston head prevents the next carton from prematurely operating the piston. The leading carton operates a photo-electric cell thereby starting the hoist motor 65. At this time, the carton is held by stops 56 on the arms 55. A cam disc 68 is rotated to operate further circuits which cause the members 73, 74 to retract as the hoist rises and to be re-extended below the carton, before the hoist is lowered. At the same time the piston 24 is withdrawn to permit the next carton to reach the abutment 15. As this carton is raised below the first carton, the members 73, 74 are again withdrawn, returning below the second carton. When a stack is formed by further repetition of the cycle, the top carton operates a circuit to prevent the reextension of the members 73, 74 so that the stack is lowered on to the conveyer 10 for discharge. The arms 55 pass below the conveyer 10 so that the stops 56 are out of action. Further switches stop and subsequently re-set the hoist in its receiving position. Adjustable features include: side panels 13, for accommodating cartons of different width; bearings 72, to provide varying heights of lift hoist; and means for varying the mechanism timing, Fig. 7 (not shown).
