Apparatus for assembling articles on a pallet comprises a vertically movable platform for receiving a tier of articles at an upper position and for lowering them to a discharge position closely above the pallet on a preceding tier on the pallet, the platform being slidable transversely from beneath the articles to deposit them on the pallet on tier below. The platform consists of a series of rollers 82, the ends of which are carried by chains 84 running round sprockets 86, 88, 94, 98, the sprockets 94 being driven by a motor 104 to withdraw the rollers from beneath the articles and carry them to one side as in Fig. 3. The sprockets, chains and motor are mounted on a framework 54, 56, 58 movable vertically by a motor 74 through chains 60. A stripper bar 110 mounted on arms 112 is pivoted on the framework and is lowered to engage the rear of a tier of articles by a motor 116. In operation, when the framework is in its upper position and the platform positioned as in Fig. 1, a gate 130 is lowered permitting a tier of articles 46 to pass from a conveyer 44 on to the rollers 82. The gate rises when the platform is loaded, and the framework descends. The descent is halted by the interruption of light beams 155 of photo-electric means on the framework by either the pallet 42 or articles previously deposited on it. The stopper 110 pivots down to engage the tier and the rollers 82 are withdrawn to permit it to fall onto the pallet. The working of the device is fully automatic, being controlled by switches operated by movement of the framework and platform. An electrical control system, Fig 9 (not shown), is described.
