A row of piles of newspapers is pushed on to trap doors 30, 31 (Fig. 5, not shown) on a stacker 14 (see also Fig. 1) which is lowered to a position where the row is dropped on to a pallet 23 which is subsequently moved one step forwardly to receive the next row. In the form shown, each pile is delivered from tines 26 on the descending run of an elevator 25 which overtakes the stacker during its descent to transfer the pile of tines 27a (Fig. 2, not shown) on the stacker; a plate 29 then pushes the pile on to trap doors 30, 31. When the last pile of a row has been pushed on to the doors 30, 31, the first pile strikes against a switch 48 (Fig. 5, not shown), which actuates a solenoid valve to admit air to a cylinder 33 so that a yoke 49 attached to the doors 30, 31 is depressed and the doors swing down. Downward movement of the doors actuates a switch to start the upward movement of the stacker. In the upper position switches are tripped to raise the doors 30, 31 and start the forward movement of the pallet conveyer to receive the next row of piles. Fully loaded pallets 24 (Fig. 1) are removed on a conveyer belt 18 and empty pallets 22 fed beneath the stacker. The distance between the doors 30, 31 is adjustable so that different widths of newspapers may be stacked.
