Abstract

1,260,123. Packaging machine; transferring articles between conveyers. WENTCROFT ENGS. Ltd. 6 Nov., 1969 [6 Nov., 1968], No. 52489/68. Headings B8A and B8C. In a packaging machine, packets 13 of potato crisps are fed in series on a conveyer 10 to a loading station where indexing plates 17, carried by endless chains 14, push the packets 13 along a fly-plate 18 to indexing positions 19-22, the fly-plate 18 then being retracted to drop the packets 13 on to a platform 23. The platform 23 is then lowered and a second row of packets is collated on the plate 18 and then dropped on to the first row, this operation being repeated until a pile with six layers of packets 13 is formed. The pile is then discharged on to a container (not shown) or is pushed on to a base 28 by a plunger 26. A second pile of packets is then formed on the platform 23 and pushed on to the base 28 by the plunger 26, the two piles being compacted between the plunger 26 and a second plunger 27. A further plunger 31 is then actuated to push the packets into a container (not shown). The packets 13 are fed to the conveyer 10 by a second conveyer (not shown) which travels more slowly than the conveyer 10. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the fly-plate 18 is replaced by two plates (32, 33) which are drawn apart to allow the packets to drop on to the platform 23. In a third embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the conveyer 10 feeds the packets 13 one at a time to a slotted plate (35) having pivotally mounted rods (34) in the slots. The rods (34) are then pivoted upwardly to lift the packet 13 into engagement with an indexing plate 17 which is slotted to accommodate the rods (34). An air nozzle (39) also aids in moving the packet from the plate (35).
