Apparatus for forming stacks of filled bags &c. on, for example, the platform of a lorry, comprises an infeed conveyer terminating in a transverse roller conveyer on which a row of articles is assembled, the row being lifted from the rollers by an elevator carriage which transports it to the stacking position where it is stripped off the carriage. The apparatus is mounted on wheels so as to move backwards in steps to form successive stacks. The apparatus is supported by wheels 10, 11 on the platform 2 and connected to the loading wharf by rack-toothed rods 7. Bags are received from a shoot 140 by a conveyer 12 and deposited on driven rollers 17 of the transverse conveyer. Initially projecting stop means 20, 21 which is depressed by the bag when the latter is fully on the rollers, prevents skewing. When a row has been assembled on the rollers, a carriage 30 running in channel members 29 forming part of an elevator 28, is caused, by switches operated by the row, to rise beneath the rollers 17. Plates 35 enter between the rollers and take off the row. The carriage then moves to the left, as shown, beneath a comblike stripper member 38, 40 held raised by contact between elements 43, 44. The elevator then descends releasing the stripper and the carriage moves to the right, the plates 35 passing through slots 41 in the stripper. The row is thus deposited on the platform. When the desired height of stack has been achieved, the next movement of the carriage to the left causes it to contact the previously deposited row. It then pushes the apparatus rearwardly so that a second stack may be built adjacent the first.
