Abstract

653,990. Case stacking. WEBSTER, A. H. Aug. 25, 1948, No. 22393. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iii)] A case stacking mechanism comprises means (1) for lifting a case (2) to a pre-arranged level, supporting means (3) for receiving the elevated case and for supporting it in the elevated position while the lifting means descends to receive another case for elevation thereto and movable means for moving the stack of cases therefrom. Fig. 1. Cases 2 are received by vertically reciprocating platform 1. The platform 1 rises, conveying the case until the case slides past pivoted pawls 3 and rests thereon. The movement of the pawls works a switch which causes the lift to descend again to receive another case. The platform 1 then rises again and pushes up the first case so that two cases now rest on pawls 3, and so on till on pawls 3 rest a stack of cases 2 of such a height that the switch 12 is operated by the top of the stack to stop the movement of the platform and to bring into operation pusher 6 which pushes the stack of cases rightwards on to palet 11 resting on grill 9, which is held by piston-rod 10. As the pusher 6 withdraws it operates a switch to bring again into operation platform 1 which commences to raise another case 2 till a second stack of cases 2 is resting upon pawls 3, whereupon actuation of switch 12 again releases pusher 6 which pushes this second stack on to grill 9, and this second stack in turn pushes forward the first stack of cases so that the latter operates switches 13. These switches prevent further movement of pusher 6 and also actuate piston-rod 10 which descends till the pallet 11 touches the ground and thus supports the stacks of cases; pallet and cases are removed; an empty pallet placed on grill 9; and piston-rod 10 supporting the second pallet 11 is raised to its original position to set switches 13 ready for the next sequence. Preferably there are two sets of pawls and two side-by-side pushers 6 working simultaneously and the pallet 11 then supports and discharges four stacks of cases. Specification 645,920 is referred to.
