958,345. Pipe joints. ALPURA A.G. Dec. 17, 1962 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 47610/62. Heading F2G. A seal in which two abutting sealing surfaces are disposed between a sterile first space 11 and a non sterile second space, e.g. the atmosphere, the presence in the second space being higher than that in the first, comprises a cavity 20 enclosed by the sealing surfaces 18, 19 and means for maintaining a lower pressure in the cavity than in the second space. The space 11 is the inside of two pipes 12, 13 having flanges 14, 15, the cavity 20 being an annular groove in the surface 19 of the flange 15 and communicating through a tube 22 with a vacuum pump. In the event of a leakage, air penetrating between the surfaces 18, 19, together with germs entrained by such air, is drawn off through the pipe 22 and does not reach the space 11. For initial sterilization, high temperature steam is admitted to the cavity 20 through a tube 25, leaving by the tube 22. High temperature steam is passed through the pipes 12, 13 and sterilizes the cavity 11. Alternatively a chemical sterilizer may be used. The sealing surfaces may be held together by a ring nut instead of bolted flanges. The seal can be in a connection other than tubular.
