Abstract

896,048. Pipe joints. SERCK RADIATORS Ltd. Feb. 2, 1961 [Feb. 2, 1960], No. 3616/60. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XVIII] The cover 12 of a cylindrical container 11 is secured thereto by bolts, &c., not shown, and is sealed thereon by means of resilient, e.g. rubber, rings 19 which are carried on an annular extension 15 of a rigid ring 13 slidably mounted in a recess formed within a flange 10 surrounding the container opening, the pressure within the container forcing the ring 13 outwardly so that the extension 15 enters an annular recess 16 formed in the cover, thus compressing the rings 19 between shoulders 18 on the ring and the cover and causing them to expand into sealing engagement with the flange 10 and a spigot 14 integral with the cover. A vent hole 17 allows air to escape from the recess 16 as the extension 15 moves thereinto. In a modification, Fig. 3, the container constitutes the outer casing of a heat exchanger comprising a tube plate 21. An intermediate ring 24 is disposed between the cover and the container rim flange and has opposed recesses into which the extensions of two rings 13 can move. In this case the inner resilient rings 19 seal on the peripheral edge of the tube plate. In further modifications, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), the outermost sealing ring is replaced by conventional sealing means between the cover and tube plate. The sealing means may be applied as a fluid tight joint between the adjacent ends of a pair of pipes.
