Abstract

835,160. Stuffing-box substitutes. LINCOLN, R. L. Oct. 21, 1957, No. 32822/57. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XIII] A seal 17 provided around a rotary heat transfer element 5 (see Group XIII) at the point where it passes through an aperture in a wall 4 separating the heat-exchanging fluids, comprises a ring member 18 secured to the wall and having a rim 19 against which asbestos or like material 20 is held in sealing engagement by the differential pressure between the fluids flowing on opposite sides of the wall 4. The material 20 is clamped between split cover rings 21, 22 spaced by a spacer ring 24. Also contained between the rings 21, 22 is a carbon seal ring made up of segments 26 held in sealing engagement with each other and with the surface of the rotary element 5 by a coil-spring 28.
