Abstract

918,271. Covers for resisting fluid pressure. DANKS & CO. (OLDBURY) Ltd., EDWIN. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 9, 1958], No. 28864/58. Class 123 (1). A dished cover 6 for a cylindrical pressure vessel 2 having an externally flanged rim 16 has a mating flange 10 to which is bolted a semicircular channel-section locking member 22, an identical member 24 being bolted to the flange 16 so that when the cover is slid downwardly into the closed position the locking members 22, 24 respectively engage over the flanges 16, 10 to hold them together. To seal the closure a flexible joint ring 32 held in an annular groove 30 in the flange 16 is forced into contact with the flange 10 by air or other fluid under pressure admitted through a duct 36. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 8, the cover is supported by a hinged frame 40 and the locking member is formed in four equal arcuate sections 46, 48, 50, 52. The sections are advanced into the locking position and retracted hydraulically, each section having a pair of pads 54 to each of which is secured a connecting rod 60 from an hydraulic cylinder 62 mounted on a bracket 64 attached to the end of the pressure vessel.
