851,395. Covers for resisting fluid pressure. THIES, A., THIES, A. jun., THIES, P., and THIES, B., [trading as THIES KOMMANDITGESELLSHAFT. SPEZIALMASCHINENFABRIK, B.]. Oct. 24, 1958 [Oct. 26, 1957], No. 34207/58. Class 123(1) A cylindrical pressure vessel 12 having a flatsurfaced rim flange 1 with a groove 13 for a resilient packing ring 3 has a lid 11 with a flange 2 provided with circumferential outer and inner chamfered surface portions 4, 5 and an intermediate flat surface portion 10. The two flanges are locked together when the vessel is closed by a channel section split ring 8 the halves 6, 7 of which are respectively welded to the flanges 2, 1 and are hinged together at 9. When the vessel is closed the cover is slid laterally across the open mouth of the vessel, the packing ring 3 being engaged and compressed by the chamfers 4, 5 on the leading and trailing edges of the flange 2 so that when the flanges 1, 2 enter the two halves of the locking ring the packing ring will engage the seating surface 10 in a compressed condition to effect the sealing of the closure.
