Abstract

956,918. Fluid friction brakes; pneumatic dash-pots. GROUPEMENT ATOMIQUE ALSACIENNE ATLANTIQUE. June 12, 1962 [June 19, 1961], No. 22508/62. Headings F2E and F2S. [Also in Division G6] Means for pneumatically braking the fall of a moving object fixed to the piston of a pneumatic jack comprises a hollow rod having one or more holes at a point near its connection to the object and one or more holes longitudinally spaced therefrom, said spacing being a function of the distance through which the object falls, an orifice near the base of the cylinder wall of jack, said orifice communicating through a non-return valve with a tank; and a calibrated exhaust orifice provided in said tank. A neuclear reactor is described in which a control rod 1 is carried on a pistonrod 11 of a jack which can be operated by gas pressure to drive the control rod along inside an immersion tube 2 from the locality of a sheath 6 in a block 7 to the locality of a collar 4 in a block 5. The piston-rod 11 is tubular and has radial holes 13 and 14 at a distance apart dependent on the distance the control rod has to travel. The lower end of the jack cylinder 8 communicates with the outside by way of a non-return valve 18, a tank 16, a calibrated orifice 19 and a pipe 20. When the jack piston is moved from the dotted position in Fig. 2 to the full-line position air escapes from the space 22 through the hollow piston-rod to the space on the other side of the bearing block 12 and also out through the orifice 19. Towards the end of travel the holes 14 have moved outside the block 12 and the orifice 19 then provides a shock-absorbing effect. Finally, gas trapped in the space 22 can only escape back through a groove 21 in the cylinder wall. A spring buffer 23 is also provided.
