783,462. Lathe and like centres. STOUT, F. A. April 29, 1955, No. 12504/55. Class 83 (3). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXIX] In a lathe &c. wherein work is mounted between centres on head and tail stocks respectively, an hydraulic mechanism is included in the tailstock whereby the pressure exerted thereby on the work is limited to a desired maximum at which the mechanism yields. The mechanism comprises a cylinder 10, divided into pressure and reset chambers 12, 13 respectively by a head 11, pressure and reset pistons 14, 15 working in the chambers 12, 13 which are filled with fluid of low compressibility, a releaseduct and a reset-duct in the head 11, each duct being provided with a one-way valve 16, 17 respectively, and a spring 24 controlling the release valve 16 which operates against the piston 14 to determine the magnitude of the force at which the release valve opens. The centre may be supported by the piston 14. The release valve 16 is normally held closed by a plunger operated by a push-rod 20 having a flange which slidably engages the wall of cylinder 10, and against which the spring 24 abuts. The other end of the spring 24 is constrained by a flanged rod 25 slidable within the cylinder and adjustable by micrometer control means 26. A bush 11a mounted in the release duct limits the opening movement of the valve 16.
