Abstract

869,188. Fluid-pressure presses. PARKINSON & TOWN Ltd. Dec. 31, 1959 [Jan. 1, 1959; April 9, 1959], Nos. 12/59 and 11930/59. Class 122 (3). [Also in Group XXII] A fluid-pressure power press comprises a piston 8 mounted in a cylinder, a piston-rod 15 extending out of the cylinder at both ends, means for reciprocating the piston in the cylinder, a tool-holder connected to one end of the piston-rod, and means consisting of a connection between the piston-rod and piston which allows the piston-rod to be retracted through the piston to give an occasional displacement of the tool. holder greater than that of the normal working stroke of the piston for tool-changing purposes. The cylinder comprises a pair of metal discs 1, 2 of equal diameter, each with an axial bore 3 on its outer side and separated by an annular member 4 constituting the peripheral wall of the cylinder. The piston 8 is formed with bosses 9, 11 sliding in bores 10, 12 in the bosses 3 and a screw-threaded bore in which is mounted the piston-rod 15 carrying at its upper end a hand wheel 16 to turn the rod, means being provided for holding the piston against this rotation. Air admission ports 18, 19 are shown as formed in the discs 1, 2, and the piston is sealed in the cylinder by sealing-rings 13, 14. In use, the piston has a constant working stroke but, when extra space is required for replacing the tool, the rod 15 is screwed upward through the piston. If desired, instead of the rod 15 and the piston 8 being in positive engagement in all relative positions, there could be free association between them for the longer part of their relative movement and a positive association, as by screw-threads or inter-engaging lugs, for the remainder of their relative movement. The boss 3 of the lower disc 2 may be screw-threaded to permit fitting of the device to the head of a press. In addition, a diaphragm seal may be used between the piston and cylinder. The first Provisional Specification describes also a construction where the piston-rod is rigidly attached to the piston and the upper end wall of the cylinder is movable so as to increase the stroke of the piston to allow adjustment of the tools.
