Abstract
873,061. Hydraulic dampers. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. May 10, 1960 [May 25, 1959], No. 17767/59. Class 108(3). A hydraulic damper comprises a cylinder 2 and a hollow cylindrical ram 9 in which a freely floating piston 6 is slidably guided on its piston rod 7 and divides the cylinder space into two chambers 4, 5, the aggregate volume of which is maintained constant by the movements of the piston 6, restricted flow between the chambers taking place through an adjustable needle valve. 11 and passage 10 in the cylinder 2. The outer end 19 of the ram 9 is vented to atmosphere at 20 to permit unrestricted movement of the piston 6 in the ram 9. A non-return valve 13 may be provided in the piston 6 when damping in one direction only is required. A pneumatically controlled shut-off valve 15 may also be provided in the passage 10 for locking the ram 9 at fixed positions. An independent fluid supply for the chamber 4 may also be used to enable the ram 9 to be operable as a jack when the valve 15 is closed.
