Divided out of 443,839, [Group XXIX]. [Class 80 (iii)] [See also Group XXIX] In hydraulic control systems employing transmitting or master and receiving or slave cylinders, means are provided for locking the receiving piston at any point in its range of movement said locking means being released when pressure liquid is supplied to the slave cylinder. The means may comprise balls 61, Fig. 1, in a sleeve 60 moved by a spring 65 to jam the balls against a frusto-conical surface 62, or the sleeve 60 can be suitably shaped and if necessary split longitudinally to provide radial resilience. Admission of liquid into the cylinder 58 -or a cylinder 83 supplied through a pipe 84 releases the locking means. In another form, the locking means are disposed between the receiving piston 53, Fig. 3, and a rod 82 connected to a member to be actuated, and comprise a block 81 on the rod 82 arranged in a fixed casing 72. The block has projections 74, 75 to form converging passages in which balls 76...79 are jammed by springs 80. An arm 67 connected to the piston 53 has projections 68, 69 engaging the block 81 with lost motion, and projections 70, 71 positioned between pairs of balls. Specification 443,839 is referred to.
