Abstract
508,854. Hydraulic mechanism. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HENSHAW, J. N. Jan. 5, 1938, No. 264. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups VII and XXII] A machine for operating upon elongated stock such as wire, for example a nail-making or fastener-inserting machine, is provided with a step-by-step stock-feeding mechanism comprising a hydraulic transmission of variable stroke between a mechanically-driven member of the machine and a feed slide. A camoperated rod 9 is connected, by a ball-joint and springs, to a piston 5 slidable in a cylinder 3 which is connected, by a port 21 and a pipe 45 respectively, to cylinders 19 and 47. A piston 49 in the cylinder 47 is connected to the feed slide 55, which is biassed in one direction by a spring 57. The port 21 discharges below a piston 23 which is held downwardly in the cylinder 19 by a spring 41, and can rise to an extent determined by the setting of an adjustable stop 35. When the piston 5 is moved to the left, Fig. 1, oil passes from the cylinder 3 to the cylinder 19 until the piston 23 is arrested by the stop 35, and then to the cylinder 47 to impart the feeding stroke to the slide 55. The space in the cylinder 19 above the piston 23, and a chamber 67, act as an oil reservoir connected to the cylinder 3 by a port 69 and groove 71. A pipe 77, with cock 79, connecting the spaces above and below the piston 23 is used for restoring the system to starting condition if the machine should be stopped with the piston 23 raised.
