In a continuous casting machine with a reciprocating mould, a fluidoperated cylinder-piston device is used to move the mould in the direction opposite to that of casting withdrawal and is exhausted, during movement of the mould in the casting direction, through a control valve, actuated by the fluid, so as to determine the velocity of mould movement in the direction of casting withdrawal. The mould is carried by a piston 2 in an annular cylinder 3 and moved upwardly by oil supplied thereto by a piston 9. The oil is supplied above the piston 9 from a reservoir 13 through a valve 12, and the piston is actuated by pressure air supplied beneath it from a reservoir 25 through a control valve 28. The oil is forced through a spring-loaded valve 7 whose opening may be varied by a stop 24 to vary the speed of upward movement of the mould as desired. A valve 15 is held closed by air supplied behind a piston 18. At the end of the stroke a limit switch 32 causes the air pressure behind the pistons 18 and 9 to be relieved and the mould moves downwardly, e.g. under its own weight &c. The oil in the cylinder 3 exhausts to the reservoir 13 through the valve 15, the loading of which by springs 16, 19 is adjusted by an adjuster 21 as desired to determine the velocity of the downward movement of the mould. The maximum lift of the valve 15 is adjusted by a stop 35.
