Abstract

1,254,324. Casting metals. DRUCKGUSS HEIDENAU VEB. 3 Jan., 1969, No. 442/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F1] The ram of a pressure-casting machine is driven by a two diameter piston 1, 1a which completes part of its stroke at one speed when hydraulic fluid from a pump 15 is supplied to a chamber 9 and the remainder of its stroke at increased speed when the output of an accumulator 19 is supplied to the chamber 9. When movement of the piston 1 is stopped due to the mould becoming full, an annular piston 3, 3a surrounding the small diameter piston portion la continues to move in the original direction due to its inertia. Thus hydraulic fluid in a cylinder space 7 is displaced by the annular piston portion 3a into a second pressure accumulator 13, the charging pressure of which is controlled by a valve 22. To return the pistons 1, la and 3, 3a, a changeover valve 14 is moved to the position shown, thereby exhausting chamber 9 and pressurizing a return chamber 8. The change in speed during the forward stroke is caused when a switch 20 is operated by a rod 21 movable with the piston 1, 1a. Operation of the switch 21 causes opening of a valve 18 which allows the accumulator 19 to discharge at a rate determined by an adjustable valve 17.
