Abstract

[Also in Division B3] In a horizontal cold-chamber die-casting machine the molten metal plunger (not shown, but attached to the left of a plunger piston 4) is provided with a pressure intensifier comprising a cylinder 1 with a piston 2. At the beginning of casting pressure fluid is supplied at 27 and passes through the centre void of the piston 2 to force the plunger piston 4 leftwards thus injecting metal into the die, the centre valve of piston 2 being open. The piston 2 is held stationary by pressure fluid fed from a main 12 through an adjustable valve 13. As the plunger reaches the end of its injection stroke, a back pressure wave is produced which closes the centre valve of piston 2 which piston then begins to move leftward to meet the plunger piston 4 to apply the intensified pressure to the casting. The build-up of pressure in a chamber 7 in front of piston 2 opens a control valve 9 to force fluid into a pressure reservoir 8. The valve is spring biased and adjustable by a spindle 10. During most of the metal injection cycle the pipe 6 and pipe 14 on opposite sides of the spring biased valve seat 11 are connected through a four-way valve 15. Alternatively the pressure main 25 can be connected to the valve 9 via the valve 15. The spring biasing in valve 9 can be over-ridden by connecting the pipe 14 to an oil reservoir by operating the valve 15. The valve 15 is solenoid 19 operated through a timedelay 22. The signals for actuating the solenoid are derived from the fluid pressure in a cavity 20 in front of the intensifier piston 2. By adjusting the time delay 22 the instant during the metal injection at which the valve 11 opens to allow pressure fluid into the reservoir 8 can be varied to suit the type of casting.
