Abstract

A movable part 11 of an injection mould on a platen 8 is closed with a stationary part 10 on a platen 2 in two stages by an hydraulically operated piston-and-cylinder 5, 1; in the first stage pressure liquid supplied at 17 to chamber 6 moves the piston and hence the platen 8, which is connected thereto by rods 9, during which movement liquid flows from chamber 7 to chamber 6 via a bore 22 in the piston. When the mould approaches the closed position a pin 28 on the platen 2 pivots a lever 26 causing a valve 23 gradually to close the bore 22 whereupon the chamber 7 is connected to exhaust, e.g. to a fluid supply reservoir, via an outlet 18 and valve 19, and the second stage is effected. The mould part 11 is retracted by hydraulic pistons 14 connected to the platen 8 by rods 15. In a modification the stem of the valve 23 extends from the rear wall of the cylinder in an adjustable manner. Alternatively, the chambers on opposite sides of the piston are interconnected by a valve arrangement comprising a cylindrical liner within the cylinder which, when the piston is in a forward position, co-operates with the piston periphery. In a further embodiment the chambers are interconnected by a valved passage in the cylinder wall. Instead of moving part of an injection mould, the hydraulic apparatus may be associated with the movable member of a press.
