939,323. Stapling machines. OFREX Ltd. May 31, 1962 [June 2, 1961], No. 20004/61. Class 89 (3). A pneumatically-operated stapling machine comprises a driving blade 16 connected to a piston 11 which is controlled by a trigger 34, in one position of which air enters below a flange 22 on the piston to retract and retain it at the top of the cylinder and, in another position which, actuates a valve 5 to thereby admit air to the top of the cylinder to drive the piston and also to admit air into a further part of the cylinder to act on the piston in the opposite direction to the supporting air and to equalize the force of this on the piston to eliminate the supporting effect. In the position of the machine shown in Fig. 1, air is fed into a reservoir 2 where, via a pipe 27, it enters into an annular space between a sealing ring 26 and the flange 22 on the piston, the space above the piston being connected to exhaust via a passage 8, valve stem 29 and pipe 32. Upon actuating the trigger, the valve 5 is lifted off its seat and allows air to enter passage 8 and, also, via a passage 28, act on a flange 23 on the piston to thereby cancel-out the effect of the supporting air, the piston then moving downwardly on its working stroke. A rubber buffer 14 is provided on the piston. The machine may be cast in magnesium or aluminium.
