Abstract

A pneumatically-actuated tool for driving fasteners, such as nails or staples, comprises a drive piston 2 reciprocably mounted in a cylinder 18 under the control of a main valve 20 and a control valve 25, and a pilot valve 24 for initiating the operation of the tool. The main valve 20 includes a diaphragm 40 adapted to normally close the open end 18a of the cylinder 18 by means of air supplied from a reservoir 16 via ports 82, 124, a passage 126 in a piston member 106 of the control valve 25, and a passage 48; the air above the piston is exhausted via a hollow valve member 50. In order to effect a drive stroke the pilot valve is operated so as to close the port 82, thereby exhausting the air acting on the diaphragm. Air in the reservoir 16 continually acting on the underside of the diaphragm 40 via a passage 46 then lifts the diaphragm and so allows the air to actuate the drive piston. At the end of the working stroke, the air opens a valve member 64 in the piston so that the air can then flow via a port 70 in the piston and ports 62 in the cylinder, into a return reservoir 60. At the same time the air acts on the piston control valve 106 moving it downwardly so as to thereby close the diaphragm main valve and exhaust the air above the drive piston so that it can return.
