955,992. Regulating steam temperature in boilers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. March 30, 1961 [April 5, 1960], No. 12048/60. Heading F4A. In a water tube boiler comprising a furnace 18 whence gases flow successively through passes locating a superheater 22, steam generating tube banks 14 and an economizer 19, the final steam temperature is controlled by withdrawing cooled gases downstream of the economizer by a fan 34 and blowing them into the superheater pass through nozzles 32 so as to divert a proportion of the stream of inflowing hot gases from the superheater and cause them to flow through an unoccupied space 28 beside the superheater. The extent to which the gases are diverted, and hence the superheat temperature is preferably controlled by varying the fan speed manually or automatically in response to changes in steam temperature. Alternatively or in addition the temperature may be controlled by cutting in or out one or more of the nozzles or by varying their orientation.
