955,846. Opening cut tobacco. K. KÍRBER. March 20, 1961 [March 21, 1960; Sept. 19, 1960; Nov. 21, 1960], No. 10070/61. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B2] Cut tobacco showered by a picker roll 6 from the carding drum 4 of a hopper 1 is thrown upward by a winnower roll 7, tobacco fibres falling upon the supply belt 8 of a continuous-rod feeder mechanism 9, 10, and mixed ribs and fibres passing into a funnel 11 for transfer by a worm 12 and a jigging conveyer 13 to a pneumatic separator 14 delivering ribs to a box 217 and fibres to a shoot 15 for return to the hopper 1. A second pneumatic separator 216 may separate further fibres from the ribs before they reach the box 217. Compressed air from orifices of a tapered valve-controlled tube 17 tends to prevent fibres entering the funnel 11. The winnower roll 7 has ratchet shaped teeth with radial throwing faces joined by scalloped faces. Modifications. Instead of there being a shoot 15, the pneumatically separated fibres can be delivered to the belt 8, to the tobacco acted on by the roll 7 or to an auxiliary hopper supplying fibres to the continuous-rod tobacco stream to make it up to a standard amount or to add spaced dense-end cigarette portions thereto.
