Abstract

954,789. Making turbine blades. H. J. FUCHS. March 28, 1963 [May 23, 1962], No. 12402/63. Heading B3A. A hollow turbine blade is made by extruding a blank of light metal alloy to form a hollow profile 3 approximating to the cross-section of the blade, filling a cut length of the profile with a low melting filler 4 which is less deformable than the profile, pressing the filled profile in a die to the desired shape with leading and trailing edges 7, 8, removing the resulting burrs 9, 10 and melting out the filler. The blank may be of ternary aluminium alloy containing magnesium and silicon and the filler may be of Wood's metal. Twist may be imparted to the blade during pressing. The filler is melted out during a final heat treatment.
