Abstract
845,227. Making turbine blades; extruding. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Sept. 2, 1958 [Sept. 2, 1957], No. 27686/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] A turbine blade (see Group XXVI) is formed by drilling a number of longitudinal and oblique passages 11, 13 respectively, from one end face of a billet, extruding the billet so that the passages assume an elongated cross-section and forming the blade by machining or forging so as to be of a desired aerofoil surface in which the oblique passages terminate, machining a cavity 18 adjacent the tip of the blade from which the passages are drilled and closing the cavity by a cap. The passages are filled with a filler material, such as mild steel, before extrusion of the billet and the filler removed, after final machining of the blade, by nitric acid. Specification 826,498 is referred to.
