Abstract
934,647. Making turbine blades. HENRY WIGGIN & CO. Ltd. April 12, 1962 [April 20, 1961], No. 14323/61. Class 83 (2). A blank for a turbine blade with longitudinal passages is produced by extruding a billet having drilled holes filled with filler rods that after elongation of the billet can be removed to leave the passages, and the resistance to deformation of the billet is reduced over a length from an end of the billet due to the presence of the filled holes. A rectangular billet 1 to be extruded has an axial hole 2 drilled therein to receive a filler rod 3. A length " L " of the hole is incompletely filled by the rod 3, which is drilled, slotted or tapered to reduce its crosssectional area over this length. The reduced resistance to deformation in the incompletely filled region results in a small passage 7 being produced, as compared with the passage 8 produced in the completely filled region of the hole 2. The reduced part of the filler rod may be positioned at either end of the hole 2. Fig. 10 shows a billet which has been partially extruded to leave a part 13 from which the root 14 of the blade is subsequently formed. Specification 763,115 is referred to.
