Abstract
833,523. Making turbine blades; extruding. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 10, 1958 [Jan. 11, 1957], No. 1231/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making a turbine blade from heat-resistant metal comprises providing a billet 10, Fig. 2, with a plurality of drilled holes 11 and inserting a filler therein, partially extruding the billet through a die 12, 13 to form a blade portion of approximately aerofoil shape and to leave an unextruded shroud portion 15, Fig. 7, the holes being thereby deformed into elongated or lenticular cross-section, Fig. 7A (not shown), machining the blade portion and root portion to final shape, machining a tip shroud 19, Fig. 7, from the unextruded portion 15, and removing the filler at any stage subsequent to the extrusion. The billet of nickelchrome alloy, is of substantially rectangular cross-section, Fig. 2A (not shown), and has axial or inclined blind holes filled with mild steel rods located by welding. The billet is then coated with nickel and after heating is extruded through a split die.12, 13, Fig. 3B, coated with colloidal graphite as described in Specification 828,339. The blade portion may be twisted during or after extrusion. For forming an oblique tip shroud, the base of the billet and the corresponding surface of the extrusion die are inclined. Side pieces 23, Fig. 8, are then welded to the extruded portion to provide material for the platform 22 which is machined together with a root shank 21 and fir-tree fixing 20. Holes 24 are drilled in the root to connect with the holes in the blade portion. The filler rods are removed by nitric acid to which is added a wetting agent as described in Specification 833,522. Specification 826,498 also is referred to.
