Abstract

827,289. Making turbine blades; extruding; destructible cones. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., H. Oct. 18, 1956 [Oct. 26, 1955; Sept. 24, 1956], Nos. 30650/55 and 29160/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A turbine or compressor blade having an integral root and internal cooling passages is formed by the partial extrusion of a billet 1, Fig. 1, having longitudinal blind holes 2 filled with a material which may be subsequently removed, and wherein after extrusion the solid portion of the billet remains in the container and is used to form the root, and subsequently one or more holes 12 of a cross-section different from that of the blind holes 2 is/are provided in the root to connect with the original blind holes. The billet is preferably of a creep-resisting alloy consisting predominantly of nickel and chromium with or without cobalt and also containing aluminium and titanium. The filler preferably consists of an iron-manganese-titanium alloy and is subsequently removed by acid leaching. The root may have one single hole 12 connecting with all of the blind holes and subsequently the root may be machined to fir-tree shape. Alternatively the root may be first machined to firtree shape and separate small connecting holes 9, Fig. 3 (not shown), may connect the blind holes with the steps of the root. The billet 1 may itself be an extruded length of metal having blind-filled holes.
