Abstract

836,001. Making turbine and like blades; extruding. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., H. Oct. 5, 1956 [Oct. 11, 1955], No. 28963/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A turbine or compressor blade is made by partially extruding through a die a metal billet 1 having one or more transverse holes 2 filled with a material which will flow with the billet metal and may subsequently be removed, whereby during the extrusion the holes are converted into U-shape 6, Fig. 7, with the end of each arm of the U lying in a side face of the root and the arm then curving inwards to run longitudinally of the blade. Four circular holes are first drilled in a rectangular billet, the holes are then filled and the billet is extruded parallel to the holes to elongate it and reduce its thickness; the holes are thus converted into elliptical shape, Fig. 1 (not shown). A billet length 1, Fig. 2, is then cut from the extruded billet and is itself extruded in a direction perpendicular to the filled holes 2 through a die of aerofoil shape. The. extrusion is stopped whilst enough unextruded billet metal remains in the container to form the root. The root may be subsequently converted into fir-tree shape, Fig. 9 (not shown), by forging and machining steps. A shroud 8, Fig. 7, may be formed at the tip end by upsetting. The holes may be exposed at the shroud end by machining, Fig. 8 (not shown). The filler is finally removed by acid leaching. Specification 763,141 is referred to.
