Abstract
853,188. Making turbine blades; extruding; destructible cores. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., H. Nov. 27, 1957 [Dec. 4, 1956], No. 37050/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An extrusion billet has one or more blind holes filled with a removable material which flows during extrusion and at the inner end of each hole there is provided a small plug of a material of different density to the billet metal. In the extrusion of turbine blades the billet is of a creep-resisting nickel-chromium or nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloy, the filler is of an ironmanganese-titanium alloy and the plug is of molybdenum or a molybdenum-titanium alloy. The billet is first extruded through a die of aerofoil profile and the solid end is then upset to form the root; alternatively the root may comprise a non-extruded part of the billet. After extrusion, and before or after upsetting, the workpiece is examined radiographically whereby the denser material of the plugs shows the inner ends of the holes and enables further holes to be drilled through the root to intersect the filled holes. The leading end of the aerofoil part may be subsequently upset to form a shroud.
