Abstract

1,011,486. Making poppet valves. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSENEL. Jan. 9, 1963, No. 996/63. Headings B3A and B3P. A hollow poppet valve is made by first extruding a blank 20, Fig. 9, having a blind bore with a steel filler core 23 extending out of its open end, and then forging a head 29, Fig. 11, on the solid end of the extruded blank. The core may be surmounted by a ring of copper 24 which may be removed subsequently with the core or may remain in the valve head. Fig. 12 (not shown). During the extrusion step, either the open end or the closed end, Figs. 1-4 (not shown), can be extruded through the die. A coolant such as sodium is inserted in the hollow valve and the end of the stem closed by butt welding or forging. Armouring may be applied to the head by welding.
