Abstract

586,934. Brazing. STEVENS, A. H. (Thompson Products, Inc.). Sept. 15, 1944, No. 17701. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] Making valves.-A poppet valve or other headed member comprises a body with stem and head portions 22 made of stress-resisting material such as alloy steel and a corrosionresisting head sheath 13 brazed to the head by material 14, and having its periphery connected to the head by a metal bond 23 which also seals the brazing material. In one form, a solid metal billet 10 with a reduced head 11, Fig. 5, is covered first with a thin disc 14 of copper, silver or other brazing metal and then with a cap 13 of corrosion and heat-resisting material such as an alloy of 80 per cent nickel and 20 per cent chromium. The disc may be cupped to fit over the part 11 by the action of pressing on the cap 13 so that the brazing material covers the entire inner surface of the cap. In some cases the bonding metal may be electro-plated on to the cap 13 and part 11. The assembly is heated in a hydrogen atmosphere to effect the brazing of the cap and a groove 17 cut at the edge of the cap. The billet is then die pressed and extruded to form the hollow stem, Fig. 7, with an enlarged end 22a. The groove 17 is then filled with the sealing bond 23 which may be of the same material as either the cap or the valve body, forming a bead which is subsequently ground off to form the finished head. The stem is finally filled with a coolant such as sodium and the end 22a swaged to form a closed end. In a modification, the sealing bond 23 may be made before the die pressing and extruding operations. In another modification, a solid forged valve body 42, Fig. 12, has a groove 44 machined in the under surface of the head which is then electro-plated with brazing-metal. A cap 45 with a similarly electro-plated inner surface is then placed over the head and spun over the face of the valve seating, Fig. 13, the groove 44 being finally filled with the sealing bond 47 which is ground off flush with the neck 42. A similar process may be used for making hollow valves.
