Abstract
664,614. Making turbine &c. blades. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd March 24, 1950 [March 28, 1949], No. 8410/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXVI] Cores and fillings.-In a method of making turbine and the like blades a blank 10 is forged to a rough aerofoil shape having a lengthwise extending rib 11 and formed with a lengthwise extending hole into which is inserted a core rod 18, the whole being then forged to the required shape and the core thereafter removed by chemical or physical action, to form a hollow blade. In. one embodiment a blade for a gas turbine is made from a nickel-molybdenum - chromium blank, with a mild steel core which is subsequently dissolved out or disintegrated by nitric acid. After the final forging a hole 20 is drilled and allows the acid to attack both ends of the core, the hole also providing a passage through which cooling air is delivered to the interior of the blade during use. In a modification a number of small slots or holes are provided along the leading edge of the blade, allowing the acid to attack the core along its length and also serving to discharge cooling air over the blade during use. In a further modification, the core material has a melting-point below that of the blade material but above the forging temperature, and the core is subsequently melted out.
